Hi, I am Michele, and I am a co-founder of Your Identity Transitions. We are a nonprofit organization that assists queer people in legally changing their name and gender marker.

Today, I would like to talk about something that many take for granted—the ability to carry an ID that reflects who we truly are. For transgender people, this is not just a matter of convenience. It also is not just about personal identity; rather, it has profound implications for safety, dignity, and accessibility in everyday life. Legally changing one's name and gender marker is a significant step for many transgender individuals.

Imagine walking into a bank, a polling station, or even an airport, only to be told that the person on your ID does not match the person standing there. Imagine the fear of being questioned, denied services, or even put at risk simply because a document does not reflect your reality. For many transgender individuals, this is not just an occasional inconvenience; it is a daily struggle.

Correct identification is more than a name or a marker on a card—it is recognition. It affirms a person’s identity in medical settings, employment, housing, and legal situations. It provides access to the same rights and opportunities as anyone else. Without it, transgender people can face barriers that make even the most basic aspects of life unnecessarily difficult.

Beyond practicality, this is about humanity. No one should have to prove who they are over and over again, nor should anyone be denied the ability to live authentically. When we ensure that transgender people have access to correct identification, we affirm their existence and their right to be seen, respected, and protected.

This is not a privilege—it is a right. A right that acknowledges the simple truth that we all deserve to move through the world safely, to be addressed with dignity, and to have our identities recognized without question.

Let us work toward a society where every person—regardless of gender identity—has the ability to live as their true self, without barriers, without fear, and with the same rights and respect we all deserve.
